Rock Hall Pirates & Wenches Weekend

Rock Hall is a working waterman's town on the Chesapeake, about two hours from DC. One weekend every August the whole place commits to a pirate bit and holds the line for three days. Shopkeepers in tricorn hats. Kids with eyepatches tearing down Main Street. Boats in the harbor flying skull flags. This is the 19th year they've run it.

Main Street is the heart of it: vendors, food, live music, and pirate performers working the crowd. There's a costume contest, kids' games, and raffles throughout the weekend. Walking around costs nothing, which makes it an easier call if your kids run out of steam after ninety minutes. Come in costume. Nearly everyone does, and a kid in a plain t-shirt notices.

Parent Tips 💡

• ✓Plan around the Bay Bridge, not the festival: Leave DC before 8am Saturday or you'll sit. Sunday afternoon westbound is the worst window of the weekend, so either head home by 2pm or wait until after 7.
• ✓Costumes are low effort: A bandana and a dollar-store eyepatch clears the bar. Kids care about being in on it, not about accuracy.
• ✓Main Street has almost no shade: Hats, sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle each. August on the Eastern Shore is humid and the pavement holds heat.
• ✓Bathrooms are thin: Portable toilets plus a handful of businesses. Handle it before you park, and don't count on finding a changing table.
• ✓Bring cash: Plenty of the smaller Main Street vendors and game booths still run cash-only.
• ✓Check the schedule the week of: Parade and costume contest times shift year to year. The organizers post the final lineup a few days out.
• ✓Make it a day trip, not a drive-by: You're two hours out. Chestertown is 20 minutes away with lunch spots and a walkable waterfront if you want to stretch the day.
