The Best Free Hour of Your Whole Saturday
The National Theatre has been putting on free Saturday morning shows for children longer than most of us have been parents, and the new season opens on September 12 with the Choy Wun Lion Dance Troupe. Drums, cymbals, and enormous costumed lions moving right past the seats. There are two performances, 10am and 11:30am, and every program this season is interpreted in ASL.
Here is why this one is worth the trip downtown. It costs nothing, so if your kid decides after ten minutes that they are done, you can walk out and you have lost exactly nothing. No sunk cost, no guilt, nobody looking at you. That freedom changes how a morning feels when you have a three-year-old who might go either way.
Reserve on Eventbrite so you know you have seats, but walk-ups get in when there is room. The theatre sits on Pennsylvania Avenue between Metro Center and Federal Triangle, which makes it easy to add a museum afterward or just walk down toward the Mall. And if your kid loves it, the season keeps going: Afro-Peruvian drumming in October, holiday stories in December, Indian classical dance in the spring.

Parent Tips 💡
- Reserve, then go even if you forgot. Walk-ups are welcome as long as there is space, so a missed registration is not the end of it.
- Take the 10am if mornings are your window. The second show at 11:30 runs closer to lunch, which is a gamble with a toddler.
- Get there fifteen minutes early. The seats near the front are where a small kid actually sees the lions.
- Make a morning of it. You are two blocks from the museums. Show first, then something indoors.
- Save the season calendar. This is a monthly habit for a lot of DC families, not a one-time outing.
