The Easiest Free Concert Night in Maryland

Every Wednesday evening in summer, the big lawn behind the Music Center at Strathmore turns into the lowest-effort great night out in Montgomery County. A free concert starts at 7:30 on the Gudelsky Gazebo Stage, the hillside fills with blankets and camp chairs, and the kids do what kids do on a big safe lawn at golden hour: dance badly, roll down the hill, and make friends with whoever has the best snacks. We've seen fado singers, soul bands, and bluegrass up there, and honestly the lineup almost doesn't matter. The lawn is the show.

Dinner solves itself: there's a BBQ tent and a Ben & Jerry's truck on site, or bring your own picnic (no outside alcohol). The series runs through August 12, so as I write this there are just a couple of Wednesdays left. Each week's artist is posted on strathmore.org, and the free RSVP is worth doing for one reason: if a summer storm rolls in, they email you, and the show moves inside the Music Center, first come first served. Grosvenor Metro connects to the lawn by a covered walkway, which makes this one of the few concert nights in the region where nobody has to think about parking.
