Fado Night on the Strathmore Lawn

This week's free Live from the Lawn concert brings something you don't hear on a suburban lawn very often: fado, the soulful traditional music of Portugal, sung by Nathalie Pires, one of the leading fado voices performing in the US. Her voice fills the whole hillside behind the Music Center without her seeming to try, and the trio behind her includes the Portuguese guitarra that gives fado its unmistakable shimmer. Show starts at 7:30pm at the Gudelsky Gazebo Stage, free with no tickets, though Strathmore recommends the RSVP for weather updates.

If fado sounds too fancy for a night out with kids, it isn't. This series is built for families: blankets and lawn chairs spread across the grass, kids dancing or rolling down the hill, the BBQ tent and the Ben & Jerry's truck handling dinner and dessert. No outside alcohol. If it storms, the show moves inside the Music Center, first come, first served. And there's something quietly great about kids hearing live music in another language and realizing they don't need the words.
