Big Trucks, Small Hands, and a Quiet Hour First
If you have a kid who points at every garbage truck on the street, the Monday holiday has a plan for you. The McLean Community Center is holding Touch a Truck on Monday, October 12, in its parking lot, and it's free.
It runs from 9 to noon, and the first hour, 9 to 10, is a quiet hour, meant for kids who don't love loud horns and sirens. That makes a big difference for toddlers and for kids with sensory sensitivities. From 10 to noon it's the regular event.
The center's listing doesn't say which vehicles are coming, so I can't promise a fire engine, though these events usually bring a mix of work trucks and emergency vehicles. Wear sneakers, bring a snack, and get there early if your kid hates noise. It's open to all ages, so older siblings won't feel left out.

Parent Tips π‘
- Go during quiet hour. 9 to 10 is the gentle version for noise-sensitive kids.
- Bring ear protection anyway. Even a short horn blast can end the morning for a toddler.
- Wear sneakers. A parking lot full of trucks is no place for sandals.
- Have your phone ready. If they get to sit up front, that's the photo of the week.
- Keep the holiday going. Cox Farms and Great Country Farms are both open Monday.
