Wolf Trap Children's Theatre-in-the-Woods 2026
Wolf Trap runs a summer-long series of short outdoor shows built specifically for kids, tucked into a wooded amphitheater off the main lawn. The 2026 season opens June 20 and keeps going through August, with about 35 performances and a rotating cast of musicians, dancers, puppeteers, and storytellers. Each show runs roughly an hour and is aimed at ages 4 and up, so it's long enough to feel like a real outing but short enough that nobody's patience runs out.
Tickets are cheap, usually around $12, and most shows start at 10:30am, which is a friendly time for younger kids. The setting does a lot of the work here: shade, trees, and open air instead of a dark theater, so wiggly kids can be wiggly without anyone shushing them. Early-season picks include Jules! on June 20-21 and AlphaBugs! on June 24. If your child has never sat through live performance before, this is a low-pressure place to try it.

Parent Tips 💡
- Buy tickets ahead of time: Popular shows sell out, especially the puppet and musical ones. Booking online beforehand beats finding out at the gate.
- Arrive 20-30 minutes early: Seating is first-come, and the closer rows go fast. Early arrival also gives kids time to settle before the show starts.
- Dress for the weather: It's an outdoor venue. A hat and sunscreen for warm mornings, a light layer if clouds roll in. Shows usually go on rain or shine under cover.
- Pack a small snack and water: An hour is just long enough that a granola bar at the midpoint keeps a 4-year-old happy. There's a concession, but lines eat into the short runtime.
- Hit the restroom before it starts: Once you're seated in the woods, a mid-show bathroom run means missing a chunk of a 60-minute show.
- Pair it with a picnic on the lawn: The grounds are pleasant for a post-show snack. Bring a blanket and let kids run before the drive home.
