World Children's Festival 2026
Here's one you can't put off until next summer: the World Children's Festival only happens once every four years, and 2026 is the year. From Saturday, July 25 through Monday, July 27, a stretch of the National Mall near 12th Street NW turns into a giant outdoor workshop run for kids and largely by kids. Young artists and performers come from over a dozen countries, and your children can just walk up and join in. There are art tables, music and dance performances, and hands-on STEAM activities going from 10am to 5pm each day. All of it is free.
Each day has its own theme. Saturday is about health and the environment, Sunday is creativity and imagination, and Monday is peace and leadership. Sunday is the one my kids would pick: children work together on a "Children's Earth Flag" that is meant to fly on NASA's first human mission to Mars. On Monday, kids paint a large mural as a birthday gift for America's 250th. You don't need to commit to a full day. An hour or two in the morning before the heat peaks works fine, and the Smithsonian museums are right across the street when everyone needs air conditioning.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- There is almost no shade on that part of the Mall. Hats, sunscreen, and a filled water bottle for everyone. There are refill fountains near the museums.
- Go in the morning. The 10am-noon window means cooler temps and shorter waits at the popular activity tables.
- Pick your day by theme. Sunday's Earth Flag session is the one kids talk about afterward. Monday's mural painting is great for kids who like big messy projects.
- Use the museums across the street for bathrooms, air conditioning, and a lunch break. The Castle and the Hirshhorn are closest.
- Pack snacks. Food trucks park along the Mall but lunch lines get long, and hungry kids don't negotiate.
