Once a year, the Smithsonian American Art Museum fills its big glass-covered courtyard with video games and lets everyone play for free. That day is Saturday, July 25 this year, from 11:30am to 7pm. Kids can bounce between classic arcade cabinets, console stations set up by the MAGFest crew, and an Indie Showcase where they can try new games and actually talk to the people who designed and coded them. This year's showcase features games made by women in game development, and kids get to meet the actual makers, not just play the games. At 1pm and 4pm, the Triforce Quartet plays video game music on string instruments, and hearing a Zelda theme on a cello is worth the trip on its own.

Two practical things make this event work for families. First, the opening 90 minutes (11:30 to 1) are designated quiet hours with reduced noise, which is the window to come if your child gets overwhelmed easily, and the museum lends out headphones all day. Second, the Kogod Courtyard is indoors under a glass canopy with air conditioning, so this is a legit escape from late-July heat. It's free, and registration on the museum's site is encouraged but not required. Last call for game play is 6:50pm.
