Lit-Up Boats on the Potomac

The Holiday Boat Parade of Lights is Saturday, December 5, on the Old Town Alexandria waterfront. It's the 26th year, it's free, and the boats start parading at 5:30pm, decorated in lights. In early December that's right after dark, which is perfect for kids who still go to bed early.

Waterfront Park has dockside festivities from 2 to 8pm, with food, activities and a Port City pop-up beer garden for the grown-ups. The city runs the event now, along with the Scottish Walk Holiday Parade that same morning.

This is one of the busiest nights in Old Town all year, so plan your trip in. The waterfront garages fill up early and roads close. King Street Metro plus the free King Street Trolley or a free DASH bus is the low-stress route. Dress everyone warmer than you think: it's windy by the river once the sun goes down.
