Race Cars on the National Mall
For the first time ever, IndyCar is racing on a street circuit around the National Mall. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix runs Saturday and Sunday, August 22-23, as part of America's 250th birthday summer, with practice and qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday. Race cars at 180 mph with the Capitol in the background is a once-in-a-childhood sight, and for a lot of DMV kids this will be the first real race they ever see without a five hour drive.
Two honest notes for parents. First, it's loud, genuinely loud, so pack real ear protection for kids (over-ear muffs for the little ones, foam plugs minimum for everyone else). Second, expect road closures across the entire Mall area all weekend, which makes Metro the only sensible approach. Ticket details and viewing areas are still rolling out; we'll cover the family angle, where to stand, and what's free to watch in the newsletter as the race gets closer.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Buy ear protection now. Over-ear muffs for little kids sell out near race weekends everywhere.
- Saturday is the family day. Practice and qualifying have smaller crowds, cheaper seats, and the same speed.
- Pick shade over sightline. August sun on the Mall beats you long before the checkered flag.
- Set a meeting point. Race crowds plus fencing is exactly how families get separated.
- Watch the newsletter. We'll break down family viewing spots and what's free to see as details are announced.
