DockDogs at The Wharf

Dogs. Flying. For Free.

I have written about a lot of events on this site and I have never once gotten to type this sentence: on Saturday, dogs from around the country will sprint down a dock at The Wharf and launch themselves into a 40-foot pool, and it's free to watch all day. DockDogs is the big leagues of canine aquatics, and this is its DC debut. The events have names like Big Air (longest jump), Extreme Vertical (highest grab), and Speed Retrieve (fastest splash-and-back), and each one is exactly as entertaining as it sounds. There's an awards ceremony with oversized ribbons, because of course there is.

For families this is close to a perfect Saturday setup. It runs 10am to 6pm on Transit Pier, drop-in style, so you can build it around naps or swim lessons instead of the other way around. Come for 45 minutes or camp out for the afternoon. The Wharf's restaurants, splash fountain, and free promenade swings are all steps away for the inevitable snack-and-reset breaks. One honest warning from a parent who knows: you will be asked, possibly repeatedly, why your family does not have a dog. Prepare your answer on the drive over.
