First Fish, Free, Right by Nats Park

There is a specific face a kid makes when the line goes tight for the first time, and Anacostia Riverkeeper gives it away for free every summer Friday. From 5 to 8pm at Diamond Teague Pier, right across from Nats Park, their crew hands your kid a rod, baits the hook, and teaches the whole thing from cast to catch-and-release. You don't need gear, you don't need a license, and you very much don't need to know what you're doing. First-timers aren't just welcome, they're the point of the program.

The setting is half the fun: boats coming and going, the ballpark towering next door, and the Anacostia doing its steady thing under the pier. Kids pull up catfish and sunfish and the occasional surprise, every fish goes back in the river, and the volunteers narrate the whole operation like it's a nature documentary. It's free but you should register ahead on Anacostia Riverkeeper's site, because rods are limited and summer Fridays fill. On a Nats home game night, the pre-game buzz around Navy Yard turns the walk over into part of the outing.
