A Small-Town Parade 20 Minutes from DC

Kensington does Labor Day the old way. On Monday, September 7 at 10am, the annual parade rolls from Plyers Mill Road to Noyes Library, with fire trucks with sirens, marching bands, dance groups, horses, and homemade floats, with half the town waving from camp chairs along the route. It runs rain or shine, and it’s free.

While the parade winds through town, Armory Avenue turns into the festival: bounce houses, food vendors, live music, and craft booths from 10am to 2pm. The whole thing is done by early afternoon, which means you get the big-day feeling and still make it home for naps. For kids in the 2-to-8 range, a fire truck rolling past at arm’s length is about as good as it gets.

• ✓Get there by 9:15–9:30: That buys you a parking spot, a bathroom stop, and a curb seat before the sirens start. The blocks near Noyes Library are calmer than the start of the route.
• ✓Bring camp chairs and a wagon: Locals line the route with chairs early. A wagon carries the chairs in and a tired kid out, and the walk from parking can be several blocks.
• ✓Cover ears for the fire trucks: The KVFD trucks run their sirens, and it’s loud up close. Kids who hate noise do better a block past the start, where trucks blast less often.
• ✓Pack sun protection: Mid-morning sun on an open street adds up fast. Hats and sunscreen before you leave the car saves the midday whine.
• ✓Plan bathrooms before the parade: Options are thin along the route until you reach the festival area. Go before you leave home, then use the festival facilities once you’re on Armory Ave.
• ✓Stay for lunch on Antique Row: Kensington’s little downtown has cafés and bakeries a short stroll from the festival, easier than fighting the vendor lines at peak.
