Kidwell Farm Children's Concerts
Wednesday mornings at Kidwell Farm have become one of our favorite summer routines. Every week, they bring in a different musician or group to perform a short concert for kids right there on the farm grounds. The concerts start at 10am, which is perfect because you can get there, enjoy the music, and still be home in time for lunch and naps. The whole thing lasts about 45 minutes to an hour, and it is completely free.
What makes this different from other kids' concerts is the setting. You are literally at a working farm. After the music wraps up, your kids can walk over and see the chickens, goats, pigs, and horses. My toddler could not care less about staying for the whole concert, but she would stand at the goat fence for an hour if I let her. The older kids get into the music more, dancing and clapping along, while the little ones wander around and take it all in at their own pace. Nobody is shushing anyone, nobody is stressed about behavior. It is just families on a farm listening to music on a Wednesday morning.
The performers rotate each week, so you get a good mix. Some weeks it is a singer with a guitar doing kids' songs, other weeks it is a more interactive group with instruments the kids can try. We have been to about five or six of these over two summers and have not had a bad one yet. The kids always end up dancing by the end, even the shy ones.
Frying Pan Farm Park itself is worth the trip even without the concert. There is a country store, a playground, and lots of open green space. We usually pack a blanket and snacks, find a spot near the stage area, and just hang out. If you have a toddler or preschooler and you are looking for something low-key and fun on a weekday morning, this is one of the best options in Northern Virginia. There is plenty of parking, no registration required, and you can leave whenever your kids hit their limit. It is the kind of morning that feels easy, and as parents, we do not get enough of those.
