Jazz, Picnics, and Planes in College Park

One Saturday a month all summer, the College Park Aviation Museum sets up live music outside, and the July edition lands this weekend: the Hyattsville Jazz Collective Trio, Saturday July 25 from 11am to noon. It's saxophone, bass, and drums out by the airfield, and here's the part my kids care about: small planes actually take off and land at College Park Airport, right next door, while the band plays. The airport is the oldest continuously operating one in the world, started by Wilbur Wright himself in 1909, so the planes your kids are pointing at are landing on genuinely historic ground.

The concert is free with no registration needed, and it includes museum admission, so when the set ends you walk straight into the air conditioned galleries full of early aircraft and hands-on exhibits. Bring a picnic blanket or lawn chairs; rotating food trucks park on site if you'd rather buy lunch than pack it. An 11am start is the sweet spot for the toddler-and-preschooler crowd, late enough for a slow morning, done in time for lunch and naps. This one is an easy yes.
