Air & Space: Soar Together Family Day
The Air and Space Museum does these Soar Together Family Days a few times a year, and they're always worth the trip. This one on July 12 is all about "The Sun at Maximum Activity," which sounds intense but it's really just a bunch of hands-on stations where kids learn about the sun, solar flares, and how scientists study our closest star. If your kid has ever asked you why the sun is hot or what sunspots are, this is a great way to let someone smarter than me give them a proper answer.
The activities are set up throughout the museum, and they're designed so that even little kids can participate. At past Family Days, they've had craft stations, building challenges, and interactive demos with real museum educators who are genuinely good at talking to kids without being condescending. My son spent 15 minutes at one station last time asking an educator question after question, and the guy was patient and enthusiastic the entire time. That kind of interaction is hard to replicate at home.
Here's the big bonus for July: it's air conditioned. If you're looking at the weather forecast for mid-July in DC and wondering what to do with your kids that doesn't involve melting on the National Mall, this is your answer. You're inside a world-class museum with free activities, cold air, and the kids are actually learning something. After the family day activities wrap up at 2pm, you can stick around and explore the rest of the museum. The renovated galleries are worth seeing on their own.
One thing to know: you need timed-entry passes. The museum is free, but you have to reserve passes online in advance. They go fast for special event days, so don't wait until the morning of. Book them as soon as they're available. The museum is right next to L'Enfant Plaza Metro, so getting there is easy. We usually take the Yellow or Green Line, hop off, and we're at the door in about five minutes. Plan to arrive by 10am to get the most out of the activities before it gets crowded.

Parent Tips π‘
- Book timed-entry passes early. They're free but required, and they go faster than usual on Family Day weekends. Reserve them on the Smithsonian website.
- Arrive at 10am when it starts. The activities get crowded by late morning. Early arrival means shorter lines at the hands-on stations.
- Stay after 2pm to explore the museum. The family day activities end at 2, but the museum is open until 5:30. The renovated galleries are worth seeing.
- Bring snacks or plan for lunch nearby. The museum has a cafeteria, but it gets busy. Packing snacks saves time and money.
- It's air conditioned. This is a huge win in mid-July DC heat. Dress comfortably but know you'll be indoors and cool.
- Strollers are allowed. The museum is stroller-friendly, though it can get tight in crowded galleries during events.
- Address: 600 Independence Ave SW, Washington DC 20560
