Reston Association parks its working fleet in a lot on Sunset Hills Road one morning a year and lets kids climb all over it. Dump trucks, mowers, the equipment that keeps the paths and pools running. Police and fire vehicles usually turn up too, though that depends on the kind of morning they're having.

Every child gets a Totally Trucks hard hat to take home, and in our house that helmet outlasted most actual toys. It runs 8:30 to noon, no registration, rain or shine. Three and a half hours is generous for what this is, so you can roll in at 10 and still have the place to yourselves for a while.

Parent Tips 💡

• ✓Go at 8:30 or after 10:30: The middle of the morning is the crush. First and last hour, kids get real time in the driver's seats instead of a line.
• ✓Bring ear protection for babies: Horns get pressed. A lot. Over-ear muffs are worth packing if you have a noise-sensitive kid.
• ✓Closed-toe shoes: This is real equipment with real metal steps and grease. Sandals are a bad call for climbing.
• ✓Plan on an hour, not a morning: It's a working facility lot: asphalt, no shade, no playground. Great for an hour, thin after that.
• ✓Eat before or after: No food on site. Reston Town Center is five minutes away with coffee and breakfast if you want to build a morning around it.
• ✓Helmets run out: They're free while supplies last. If the hat is the whole draw for your kid, come in the first hour.
• ✓Bathrooms are limited: It's a maintenance facility, not a park. Sort that out before you arrive.
