Anacostia River Festival 2026
The Anacostia River Festival is one of those free events that actually delivers. Now in its 11th year, it takes over the waterfront on a Saturday afternoon with live music, food trucks, local vendors, and — the part kids care about most — free canoe tours on the Anacostia River. Getting your kids into a canoe on a DC river for zero dollars is a solid Saturday. The whole thing runs from 1pm to 5pm, which is a manageable window that doesn't eat your whole day.
The festival area is flat and open, so strollers aren't a problem. There's usually a kids' activity area with crafts and games, plus the SE Market has vendors selling everything from produce to local art. The vibe is community block party more than polished festival, and that's what makes it work for families. You can grab food from the trucks, let the kids run around on the grass, and catch some live music without anyone having a meltdown over crowds.

Parent Tips 💡
- Get in line for canoes early: The free canoe tours are the main draw and they fill up. Head to the canoe launch area right at 1pm when the festival opens.
- Life jackets are provided: All canoe tours include life jackets for kids and adults. You don't need to bring your own gear.
- Bring sunscreen and hats: The park is mostly open with limited shade. Mid-May sun along the water hits harder than you'd expect.
- Pack a blanket: There's lots of grass to spread out on while listening to the music. Kids can run around while you sit.
- Food trucks take cards: Most vendors accept credit cards, but bringing some cash for the smaller market vendors is a good idea.
- Dress for the water: If your kids are doing the canoe tour, wear shoes that can get wet. Flip-flops or water shoes work well. Bring a change of shirt just in case.
