National Memorial Day Parade 2026
The National Memorial Day Parade rolls down Constitution Avenue every year on Memorial Day, and it's worth going at least once with kids. Marching bands from high schools across the country, military vehicles, floats, and veterans groups walk the route from 7th Street to 17th Street NW, passing right by the National Archives and the White House. The parade itself runs about two hours. For 2026, it's called the "Freedom 250" parade, marking the country's 250th anniversary, so expect it to be a bigger deal than usual.
Opening ceremonies and performances start at 9am, with the actual parade kicking off at 10am. There's no reserved seating, you just find a spot along Constitution Avenue and stand or sit on the curb. Kids tend to love the bands and the military trucks. It's a straightforward, old-fashioned parade, and it works well as a way to explain what Memorial Day is about. Bring a blanket to sit on and snacks, because food options near the route are limited.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Arrive by 9am to get a good spot. The curb fills up fast, especially near the National Archives (7th St) and the Smithsonian (12th St). The 9am pre-show performances are worth catching anyway.
- Bring a blanket, camp chairs, and snacks. There's no seating. You'll be standing or sitting on the ground for 2+ hours. Pack water, snacks, and something for kids to sit on.
- Sunscreen is a must. There's no shade along most of Constitution Avenue. Late May sun is strong, even in the morning.
- Combine it with a Smithsonian visit. Most Smithsonian museums are open on Memorial Day and don't require tickets. After the parade, walk to the National Mall and hit a museum while kids still have energy.
- Strollers are fine but tricky in the crowds. A carrier works better for toddlers if you want to navigate easily. Strollers are OK once you've claimed your spot.
- Restrooms are limited. Use the ones at the Smithsonian museums or the Ronald Reagan Building nearby. Portable toilets are placed along the route but lines get long.
