National Arboretum Bonsai Festival 2026
The Arboretum's annual bonsai festival is one of those events that works for basically everyone in the family. Kids who've never seen a bonsai tree before tend to be genuinely fascinated, these are full-sized trees shrunk to tabletop scale, some of them hundreds of years old. The star of the show is the Yamaki Pine, which has been in training since 1625 and survived the bombing of Hiroshima. It turns 401 this year.
The festival runs three days with live demonstrations, vendor booths selling starter trees, and beginner workshops where you can learn basic styling and repotting. For kids, there are hands-on activities throughout the weekend. The grounds are big and green, so younger ones can run around while you browse. It's the kind of outing that feels both educational and relaxing, which is a rare combo with little kids.

Parent Tips 💡
- Saturday morning is the best time for families: The opening ceremony kicks off at 10:30am with dignitaries and guest artists. After that, the crowds build. Friday is calmer but has fewer activities.
- Bring a wagon or stroller: The grounds are 446 acres. You won't cover all of it, but the walk between the bonsai museum and other attractions adds up for little legs.
- Pack snacks and water: Food vendors may be limited. There's no cafeteria on-site. Bring a cooler and have a picnic on the lawn near the Capitol Columns, kids love running between them.
- Don't skip the Capitol Columns: The 22 Corinthian columns from the original US Capitol are set in a meadow nearby. Kids go wild running between them and it makes for great photos.
- Workshops fill up fast: If your kids want to try hands-on bonsai styling, get to the workshop tent early. Materials are provided but space is limited.
- Wear comfortable shoes: Paths are paved but there's a lot of walking. Sunscreen and hats are a good idea, the bonsai pavilion is covered but the grounds are mostly open.
