DC Dragon Boat Festival
The DC Dragon Boat Festival brings one of the most visually exciting sporting events to Georgetown Waterfront. Teams paddle decorated dragon boats down the Potomac, drums pounding from the bow of each boat as they race. If your kids have never seen dragon boat racing, they are in for something special. The boats are long, colorful, and each one has a carved dragon head at the front. The races are surprisingly intense, with teams sprinting in synchronized strokes while a drummer at the front keeps the beat. It is loud, fast, and completely captivating for kids of all ages.
Beyond the races, the festival has a full slate of cultural activities. There are performances featuring traditional dance and music, craft stations where kids can make dragon masks or try calligraphy, and food vendors selling dumplings, noodles, boba, and other treats. My kids spent most of their time split between watching the boats and eating dumplings from different stalls. The food selection alone is worth the trip. Everything is set up along the Georgetown Waterfront, which is already one of the nicest walking areas in DC, so even the gaps between races are enjoyable.
Timing matters for this event. The races happen in heats throughout the day, with the finals usually in the afternoon. If you want to see the most exciting racing, plan to be there for the later rounds. If you have younger kids who are more interested in the crafts and food, morning is usually less crowded and more manageable. The whole festival is free to attend, and Georgetown offers plenty of options for extending the outing afterward. Walk along the canal, explore the shops, or just hang out on the waterfront and watch the boats. It is a full Saturday activity that feels like a real adventure without costing anything.
