DC Parks & Recreation Free Spring Break Activities
DC Parks and Recreation runs free spring break programming at recreation centers across the city April 13–18. It's genuinely underrated — free admission, available by neighborhood, and many locations include free lunch. That makes it an actual lifesaver for parents who work or need to find quality childcare for the week.
Programming includes sports, arts, STEM, swimming, cooking, and field trips. Different recreation centers offer different activities, and age groups are usually separated, so there's something for 5-year-olds through teenagers. You have to register online (and spots do fill up), but once you're in, the cost is zero.

Parent Tips 💡
- Register early: Popular programs fill fast. Sign up as soon as registration opens for the activities you want.
- Use dprspringbreak.splashthat.com to find your center: Search by ward or address to find the closest recreation center and see what programs they offer.
- Check if lunch is included: Many locations offer free breakfast and lunch. Check the program details.
- Activities vary by location: Not every center offers swimming or sports. Browse what's closest to you and pick programs your kids will enjoy.
- Mix and match programs: Some families do a full-day schedule (morning plus afternoon). Others stick to half days. Check times and build what works.
- Your kids will meet neighborhood kids: These programs are solid community spaces. Kids make real friendships and try activities they might not otherwise.
- Pack water and sunscreen if there are outdoor activities: Some programs include outdoor field time. A water bottle and sunscreen are worth throwing in a bag.
