Earth Day Celebration — National Mall & DMV Parks
Earth Day is April 22, and there's programming across the DMV. The National Mall has the big event with nature activities, exhibits, kids crafts, and community participation. But parks and nature centers all over DC, Maryland, and Virginia run their own celebrations too, so you can join wherever you are.
Kids can do cleanups (even 5-year-olds can help), nature walks, see animals, and participate in environmental activities. Most of it's free. Whether you go to the National Mall with a crowd or to your local neighborhood park with neighbors, it's a solid way to spend the day outside with kids.

Parent Tips 💡
- Bring reusable water bottles: Skip single-use plastics and show kids how to refill at fountains. It's a small but direct lesson.
- Check your local park first: Rock Creek Park, Wheaton Regional Park, and other local nature centers run Earth Day events. Check your city or county parks website instead of making a trip downtown.
- Bring a light layer: April mornings can be cool, afternoons warmer. A jacket kids can remove is smarter than overdressing.
- Cleanups are good for kids ages 5+: Give them grabber tools and let them collect trash. They actually feel helpful.
- Plan 2–3 hours: Arrive early for kids crafts; they run out of supplies. Earth Day programs vary, so check what's happening before you go.
- Pack wet wipes: You'll be handling soil and plants. Wipes help before eating.
- Wear shoes that can get dirty: Wet grass and mud are part of the deal. Waterproof shoes beat sneakers.
