Shang-Chi at Kennedy Center
The Kennedy Center's outdoor movie series at The REACH is one of the best free events in DC, and this Friday they are screening Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. If your kids are Marvel fans, this is a no-brainer. If they have not seen it yet, even better. The movie is visually gorgeous, with martial arts choreography that plays beautifully on a big outdoor screen. It is PG-13, so younger toddlers might not sit through the whole thing, but school-age kids and tweens will be completely locked in.
The REACH is the newer outdoor area of the Kennedy Center, and it is honestly one of the prettiest spots in DC for an evening event. The lawns are well-maintained, the architecture is modern and interesting, and the whole area feels designed for families to spread out and relax. Bring a big blanket, some snacks, and claim a spot on the grass. The Kennedy Center usually has food trucks or pop-up vendors for these events, so you can grab dinner on-site if you prefer not to pack anything. My usual move is to arrive about 40 minutes early, get settled, let the kids run around the lawn, and then settle in as the movie starts at sunset.
One thing that makes the Kennedy Center movie nights special is the location itself. You are watching a movie outdoors at one of the premier cultural venues in the country, on the banks of the Potomac. It feels fancier than a typical outdoor movie, even though it is completely free and casual. The free shuttle from Foggy Bottom Metro makes getting there easy, and you avoid the parking situation entirely. After the movie, the walk back along the waterfront at night is a nice way to wind down. This is one of those events where even if the movie does not hold the kids' attention for the full runtime, the evening itself is worth the trip.
