Library of Congress Fashion Family Day
The Library of Congress does not host family days very often, so when they do, it is worth paying attention. This one is themed around 250 years of American fashion, and they are setting up activity stations where kids can design their own outfits, try on historical costume replicas, and learn about how clothing has changed from colonial times to today. The Library of Congress building itself is one of the most beautiful interiors in DC, so even walking through the Great Hall feels like a special occasion.
For younger kids, the dress-up stations will probably be the biggest hit. There is something universally appealing about putting on a fancy old costume and pretending to be someone from another century. The craft stations let kids design and color their own fashion pieces, which is a fun creative activity that does not require any special skills. Older kids might be more interested in the actual fashion exhibits and the history behind how Americans dressed through different eras. It is one of those events where different ages get different things out of it, but everyone has fun.
The Library of Congress is on Capitol Hill, right behind the Capitol Building, so getting there is straightforward by Metro. Capitol South station is the closest. Keep in mind that there is a security screening to enter the building, similar to airport security, so factor in extra time if you are bringing a stroller or bags. After the family day activities, Capitol Hill is a great area to explore. The U.S. Botanic Garden is right next door and also free, and the Capitol grounds are perfect for letting kids run around. This is a free event that gives families access to one of the most impressive buildings in the country, with activities designed to make it fun for every age.
