Movies on the Potomac at National Harbor
Movies on the Potomac at National Harbor is one of those simple, perfect summer outings. You drive down to the waterfront, spread a blanket on the grass, watch the sun set over the Potomac, and then a movie plays on a big outdoor screen. There is no admission fee, no tickets to buy, no stress. Just show up with your family and enjoy the evening. National Harbor has plenty of restaurants nearby, so you can grab dinner before the film or bring a picnic from home.
The setting is what makes this event better than your average outdoor movie. National Harbor sits right on the Potomac, and watching a movie with the river and the lit-up Capital Wheel in your peripheral vision is genuinely pretty. The kids get excited about the whole experience: the blanket on the grass, eating snacks outside, staying up a little later than usual. For them it is an event, not just a movie. And for parents, it is a low-key evening that requires minimal planning. Drive there, park (parking is usually free in the evenings), and walk to the movie lawn.
If you want to make a bigger outing of it, National Harbor has a lot going on beyond the movie. The Capital Wheel is fun for older kids and adults, there are shops and restaurants along the boardwalk, and the waterfront area is great for walking and people-watching. Some families arrive in the late afternoon, eat dinner, ride the wheel, and then settle in for the movie. Others just show up 30 minutes before dusk and keep it simple. Either approach works. The movie series runs on select Saturdays through the summer, so if this weekend does not work, there will be more chances. But mid-June weather in the DC area is usually ideal for an evening outdoors, so this is a good one to try.

Parent Tips 💡
- Check which movie: The specific film is usually announced a few days before. Check the National Harbor website or social media for the title.
- Arrive at sunset: The movie starts at dusk. Arriving 30 to 45 minutes early lets you set up and enjoy the sunset over the Potomac.
- Bring blankets and chairs: Low chairs and blankets are the way to go. The lawn area fills up, so arrive early for a good spot.
- Make it an evening: National Harbor has restaurants, shops, and the Capital Wheel. Come early for dinner and stay for the movie.
- Bug spray: Being right on the water in June means mosquitoes. Bring repellent and you will be much more comfortable.
