Play Date: Marvelous Meteorites
The Natural History Museum runs these drop-in play dates for little ones, and they're honestly one of the best-kept secrets on the Mall. This Tuesday's theme is meteorites, which sounds advanced for toddlers, but the museum designs everything for tiny hands and short attention spans. Kids get to touch real meteorite fragments, do simple sorting and matching activities, and just generally mess around with space rocks in a way that feels like play, not a lecture.
It runs from 10:30am to noon and it's completely free, no tickets needed. You just show up and join in. The play date area is set up so babies and toddlers can explore at their own pace, and there are always staff around to answer questions from curious parents too. After the play date wraps up, you're already inside the museum, so you can keep exploring. The dinosaur hall is right there, the butterfly pavilion is upstairs, and the cafeteria is solid if you need to grab lunch before heading home.

Parent Tips 💡
- Arrive by 10:30 for the full experience. It's drop-in, but getting there at the start means more time with the activities before they get busy.
- The museum itself is free, so explore after. The dinosaur hall and butterfly pavilion are both great for young kids.
- Stroller-friendly. The museum is easy to get around with a stroller, and there's elevator access throughout.
- The cafeteria is good for lunch after. It's on the lower level and has kid-friendly options if you want to make a morning of it.
