Strawberry Picking Season
Strawberry season is finally here, and if you haven't taken the kids to pick their own yet, this is the week to do it. There's something about letting them walk through the rows and find the reddest berry that just clicks with kids of every age. Toddlers love putting berries in the bucket (and their mouths). Older kids turn it into a competition. And you get to stand outside in the sun for a couple of hours without anyone asking for a screen. We went last Saturday morning and the fields were gorgeous. The plants were loaded and the kids filled two buckets before we had to drag them away.
Several farms near DC are open right now. Miller Farms in Clinton, MD is close if you're coming from the city. Larriland Farm in Woodbine, MD is a bit further but has a great setup with hayrides and farm animals. Yankey Farms in Bristow, VA is a solid option on the Virginia side. Weekdays are less crowded, so if you can swing a morning trip during the week, you'll have the fields practically to yourselves. Just call ahead before you drive out, because fields can close early when they've been picked clean. Most farms charge by the pound, so you pay for what you pick. Expect to spend around $15 to $25 depending on how enthusiastic your little pickers are.
The combination of being outdoors, getting their hands dirty, and eating fruit straight off the plant makes this one of those experiences kids remember. We always end up making strawberry shortcake with whatever we bring home, which extends the fun into the kitchen. If your farm of choice has extra activities like a playground or animal pen, plan to spend a full morning there. Pack water bottles and snacks for the car ride. This is one of the easiest outings to pull together on short notice, and the payoff is huge.

Getting There πΊοΈ
Parent Tips π‘
- Call ahead to check availability. Fields can close early when they've been picked through, especially on weekends.
- Bring sunscreen and hats. You'll be out in open fields with no shade for a while.
- Wear shoes that can get muddy. The fields can be wet, especially in the morning. Leave the nice sneakers at home.
- Bring cash for farm stands. Some farms don't take cards at their produce stands.
- Go early to beat the heat and crowds. Morning trips are more comfortable and you get the best berries before everyone else.
